December 14, 2020

I wrote this on Facebook but wanted to share here are well.

Eight years ago 26 families found out that their loves ones were victims of the unthinkable tragedy that took place at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Today, and every year on December 14th, I think of these families and their unimaginable grief they carry with them. I think of the pain and suffering caused not only as a result of their loss that day but as a result of the fact that still, eight years later – we have similar tragedies unfolding far too frequently.

One year after losing her daughter (an educator at Sandy Hook), one of the parents wrote a beautiful tribute to their daughter. I reread this piece every year – hoping that in some way I’m honoring these families and the beautiful lives lost on December 14th, 2012. I wanted to share the advice written in the closing of this piece:

“At Christmas and all year long, do the right thing, be unreasonably generous, cherish your family, choose love, chase joy, don’t hold grudges, ignore life’s little irritations.”

May we take these words to heart this season.
